Salvage is a story about a young girl named "Claire" (Lauren Currie Lewis) who gets brutally murdered by a red-haired stranger named "Duke" (Chris Ferry) . She suddenly awakes, and discovers it was all a bad dream...or was it? She finds the day repeating itself again and again. (Think of a horror movie version of Groundhog Day). While trying to avoid the dreadful outcome of each day as it repeats itself, Claire searches for the mystery behind the mysterious killer, Duke Desmond.
Written and directed by Jeff & Josh Crook, this movie is a great example of what can be done with a limited budget. While it lacks some of the flair that would accompany a big budget film, Salvage makes up for it with good acting, a creative storyline, and a little imagination.
Lauren Currie Lewis was an excellent choice for the role of "Claire". She has a nice "girl-next-door" look to her, without being overly beautiful. She gives a compelling performance, and plays a sympathetic character. Chris Ferry, playing the part of Duke also deserves praise, as his performance of a sick and twisted serial killer was credible and chilling.
However some of the acting wasn't so great. Claire's boyfriend "Jimmy", played by Cody Darbe, was mediocre at best. And coupled with some bad dialogue and a few lines that seemed out of place, his character became increasingly obnoxious.
The movie starts off quickly, but after about 10 minutes, it starts to lose steam. This movie is primarily a mystery, so if you're looking for ultra-violence and gore, you might be disappointed. There are a few great scares, a few violent and disturbing scenes, and a couple creepy sequences that seemed to be "J-horror" influenced. However, the film uses its scares modestly, and in-between the scary sequences is Claire simply trying to figure what the hell is going on. Because of the film's moderate pacing, and the fact that the "mystery" is not revealed until the very end, some people might get bored or annoyed with trying to find out what's happening and will want the movie to end just to find out.
Nonetheless, this was an entertaining film with an impressive use of a modest budget. People who like psychological thrillers (and who don't mind a little violence and gore) should enjoy this film. It had me guessing right to the very end.
