Murder PartyIn this horror/comedy, a nerdy meter-maid named "Chris" stumbles across an invitation to a Halloween "Murder Party". With nothing else to do but watch cheesy horror movies with his cat, Sir Lancelot, Chris decides to make a quick costume and go to the party. He arrives at a dilapidated warehouse, only to find a small band of miscreant artists. They welcome him to the "Murder Party" and inform him that he is the party's guest of honor. They tackle him, bind him to a chair, and tell him that they plan on murdering him for an art competition.

Over the course of the evening, the artists become more interested in getting laid or high, rather than their "art". Eventually, the party spirals downward into a crazy soiree of sex, drugs and violence.

Murder Party won the audience award at the 2007 Slamdance film festival, and I could see why. It's a creative, fun-filled, comedy that doesn't take itself too seriously. I can see how such a film would stand out among the ordinary, run-of-the-mill, horror flicks at a film festival.

But that's at a film festival.

Murder Party is a type of film doesn't work as well outside that kind of setting. Some films are meant to be viewed with a group of inebriated hooligans, such as The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Viewed in a run-down theater with a like-minded misfits, The Rocky Horror Picture Show is loads of fun and an event unto itself. But it's hardly a movie worth renting by yourself at the local video store.

Similarly, I found Murder Party to be somewhat amusing, but I didn't find it to be "laugh-out-loud" funny. The characters were silly and entertaining, and the dialogue was somewhat clever. But overall I found the movie to be good, but not great. Creative, but not ingenious. Funny, but not hilarious.

People who like horror/comedies and are looking for a goofy film with a fair amount of creativity and humor will like this film. But if possible, watch this film with a group of friends. (And a six-pack of beer couldn't hurt either!)
