MirrorsFormer NY detective Ben Carson (Kiefer Sutherland), a recovering alcoholic, takes a job as a night watchman at an old burned-out department store. During the first night on the job, he starts to hear strange sounds and sees haunting images in the mirrors. He discovers an evil that's trapped in the mirrors, desperately trying to get out. While trapped, the evil can influence people through their reflection, and it's up to Ben to find the source of the evil before it turns against him and his family.

Directed by Alexandre Aja (High Tension, The Hills Have Eyes), Mirrors is a film that's turning out to be a good illustration of the rift between "die-hard" horror fanatics and the mainstream movie-going public. After surfing the web looking at other user reviews, the general consensus seems to be that the major horror sites (eg: Bloody-Disgusting) hated it, but the overall movie-going public liked it. In fact, when I saw the film the audience applauded afterwards. So, why the big discrepancy?

Well your guess is as good as mine, but I found Mirrors to be a chilling story that blends an effective mix of various horror genres. While it's primarily a supernatural thriller, it's also peppered with a few great scenes of gore (thanks to FX wiz Greg Nicotero). I have to admit, Aja could have done away with a couple of the cheap "jump out at you" scares, but overall he crafted an eerie story, with haunting visual effects.

The film was clearly influenced by J-horror films such as The Ring and The Grudge, but included additional gore that one would expect from a card-carrying member of the "splat-pack".

If you like supernatural thrillers, you should enjoy this film. It made me want to cover up my mirrors at night!
