Grizzly Park is a simple story about a group of young delinquents who are sentenced to community service at a wildlife reserve. As they make their way through the forest, they are stalked by a rogue, man-eating, grizzly bear.
The film begins with the introduction of the main characters - eight delinquents who are ordered by the court to spend a week at the park to clean the trails at the close of the season. Coincidently, there are four guys and four girls in the group, with a broad range of stereotypical characters. There's an Asian female, a tough Latina girl, a blonde sex-pot, and a hot, but ditzy brunette. On the men's side, there's a black guy, a rich white preppy guy, a prankster, and a white supremacist. None of the characters look like delinquents, but rather extras from an episode of The OC. And none of the characters are particularly convincing. "Bebe" the ditzy brunette, is unbelievably dumb, and "Scab" the supposed white supremacist, acted more like a timid stoner than a racist.
The movie also introduces an extraneous and unnecessary character named "Butch", an escaped serial killer and rapist. The character's involvement with the story is essentially limited to killing a corrections officer and driving the kids to the park. The character of "Butch" is played by Jeff Watson, the grizzly's real-life trainer, which I can only assume is the reason his character was included in the film. Other than that, the character has no real "bear"ing on the story. (Heh, get it?)
The delinquents arrive at the park and are met by "Ranger Bob" (played by Glenn Morshower of tv's "24"), who leads the group through the forest to the various camp sites. Morshower is the only credible actor of the film and yet his performance at times seemed listless and apathetic.
The pacing of the movie is somewhat sluggish, and other than a couple of scenes with "Butch", there is not much action until later in the film. The characters and dialogue are not interesting enough to keep the film moving, and the "climatic" end of the film felt rushed.
There is a fair amount of gore (albeit not the best special effects I've seen), and the characters provide good eye-candy. (There's a painfully obvious gratuitous skin-scene with the group washing themselves in a river.) Other than that, there's nothing about this film that is particularly clever or compelling. People who enjoy "when animals attack" films may like this one, but generally speaking, it's just an average and ordinary horror flick
