In his first film following the incredible success he achieved with The Blair Witch Project, Eduardo Sanchez once again demonstrates his keen prowesses as a horror movie director. Altered is a riveting story about a group of country boys who were once abducted by aliens. During their time in captivity, one of them is killed. Now, 15 years later, they manage to capture one of the aliens for retribution. They take the alien to their friend’s house to figure out what to do with it, and quickly realize they may have bitten off more than they can chew when the alien decides to fight back.
Altered is yet another example that a good horror movie can be made despite a limited budget. This is achieved through a collaborative effort between proficient script writing, skilled acting, and competent direction.
All of the characters were dynamic and realistic. The actors played off each other well, which contributed to the film’s intensity. While the movie was by no means a "splatterfest", there were a few great scenes of gore, that made even an old gore-hound like myself squirm in my seat. And prominently contributing to the overall effect of the film were brilliant creature and special makeup effects.
Nonetheless, I doubt Altered will ever be considered a horror movie "classic". While there were several things done right with this film, it still lacked certain characteristics that would place it among the horror movie elite. There was a fair amount of plot development, but the overall story remained generally predictable and flat.
There are some horror fans out there that simply do not care for sci-fi horror. If you fall in this category, there’s not much I can say to change your mind. But for everyone else, I suspect you will be pleasantly surprised with the fine quality of this low budget film.
