I have always been disgruntled about the lack of special features on the Creepshow DVD. Released in 1999 by Warner Home Video, the “special features” on the DVD consists merely of the theatrical trailer. There’s no commentary or deleted scenes. There’s no bloopers or gag reels. There aren’t even simple production photos, like on the Creepshow 2 DVD.
What’s worse is that there's no excuse for the minuscule DVD features. There are plenty of Creepshow special features that could have been added to the DVD had they chosen to do so. Director George A. Romero and special effects wizard Tom Savini are both alive and well. And at the time of the DVD release, they were both living in Pittsburgh. How hard could it have been to sit these two horror legends down for a commentary screening of the film?
Romero had to cut about 10 minutes from the film, which included a “morgue scene” and a “crawling hand” bit. Some of this deleted footage has been floating around for years (click here), and could have easily been added to the DVD. But for whatever reason, it wasn’t.
Finally after all these years, Creepshow fans have a reason to rejoice! Fangoria reports that a new Creepshow DVD, jam-packed with special features, is in the works! Apparently, Universal owns the UK distribution rights and hopes to release the special edition DVD by Halloween.
As an aside, this year marks the 25th anniversary of the theatrical release of Creepshow, which will be celebrated this June at the Texas Frightmare Weekend horror convention in Dallas, Texas. George A. Romero, Tom Savini, Adrienne Barbeau, and Tom Atkins are all scheduled to appear. Hope to see you there!
