Welcome to the Horror Reporter! I have been a fan of horror and the macabre since I was a child, so I decided to create this site as a means to express my devotion to the genre.
You may be asking yourself, “How is this site any different than the scores of other horror-related web sites out there?” Well, I believe this site will stand out from the others in two main areas - the horror movie “Reviews”, and the “Conventions” sections.
It never made any sense for me to rely on the movie reviews of the mainstream media, when the mainstream media generally despises horror movies. When you read a review by the Horror Reporter, you are reading a review written by a person that genuinely loves horror movies.
I’ve learned that people’s taste in horror movies vary like people’s taste in ice cream. Some like chocolate, others like vanilla. Similarly, while some people prefer splatter films, others prefer supernatural suspense. At the beginning of each review, I list the horror “sub-genre” under which the movie falls, be it hack ‘n slash, suspense, or monster movie (to name a few). And at the end of most reviews, I try to give my best guess on what kind of horror movie fan might enjoy that particular film.
I also give the movies a letter grade, rather than a number. I always get confused when I read a review that gives a film 3 skulls, or 2 tombstones, etc. That sort of an evaluation is meaningless to me. However, everyone has attended school at some point in their life, and everyone knows what it means to receive an “A” or an “F”.
Finally, while some of my reviews will include mainstream Hollywood movies, my primary focus will be on the lesser known horror titles. These days, independent horror film studios are pumping out movies faster than most people can watch them. Many of these movies are stinkers, but some of them are actually quite good. Hopefully my reviews will assist the casual movie watcher with navigating through the myriad of horror films out there.
The “Conventions” section is the heart of the site. Over the years I’ve had the occasion to attend several horror movie conventions. For my earlier conventions, I’ve posted a short synopsis of the event along with some photos. The more recent conventions include a full-length review and a larger photo gallery. I continue to attend these conventions regularly, so check back often to read about my latest horror convention excursion.
Well, I hope you enjoy this site as much as I’ve enjoyed creating it. Please feel free to post any horror-related comments in the “Forums” section. I always enjoy discussing horror topics with other horror fanatics like myself.
